COOPA Sessions: Year Mix 2009

Well the end of 2009 is upon us, and its finally time to release the mix that tells us the whole story of what went by this year!!

'As we move closer to the end of an era, we often let our minds wander as it takes us on a journey to let us reminisce about the year that has passed right before our eyes. We wonder what emotions flowed through our veins and what we were all feeling inside. These memories are often triggered by the simple sounds of a riff, a stroke of a chord, or a melodic phrase that passes through our ears and into our bodies..It is the power of music that makes our mind keep that memory...

As long as musical elements still exist, those memories can never be lost.... Now it is time to rediscover those memories, let the past become the present and the present to push us into the future...

Let us take the journey to rediscover those memories we all want to feel again..

Ladies and Gentlemen.. This was your year: 2009' - COOPA

BT feat. Jes: Every Other Way

Now I dont usually post Trance releases but this song is just too good to keep from you all! BT is a pioneering artist and a widely acknowledged creator of multiple musical idioms including Trance and New School Breaks. BT is known in his production circles for his signature technique, the stutter edit, also known as the BT stutter and pioneering techniques that are widely adopted in other idioms of music. This technique consists of taking a small sample of a sound and then repeating it rhythmically.

This EP package includes the Album Mix, Phunk Investigation, Whelan & DJ Scala, and of course the fantastic remix by Trance sensation Armin Van Buuren. His remix is featured in the Universal Religion: Chapter 4 Compilation, which was released three months ago.

I Hope You Enjoy!!

Larry Tee: Let's Make Nasty (Don Diablo Remix)

Don Diablo gets nasty with New York nightclub legend Larry Tee's forthcoming single 'Let's Make Nasty', out soon on Ultra Records!!

Don Diablo, who's currently on tour through North America, gets nasty with New York nightclub legend Larry Tee's forthcoming single 'Let's Make Nasty' on Ultra Records, adding tons of subbass, freaky synthstabs and his trademark guitarlicks, turning 'Let's make Nasty' into an effective clubrocker Don Diablo style. Play this baby on a big soundsystem in a dark underground club and damage will be done to the dancefloor. Expect Don Diablo to cause damage to dancefloors in Houston (Rich's, 17 Dec), El Paso (Club 101, 18 Dec) and San Diego (Voyeur, 19 Dec) this week!

I Hope You Enjoy!

BIOGRAPHY: JONO FERNANDEZ

Meet Jono Fernandez. You might think you know him from such two-dimensional catchphrases as “progressive breaks prodigy”, “tech-funk pioneer”, or even the more recent “Ableton Live guru”, but if you were forced to sum up his career circa 2009 in three words they would be “expect the unexpected”. Because while Jono has been all of those things and many more in the past, these days you’re just as likely to hear him crafting future hip house anthems or big room bombs, schooling the next generation of producers in his beloved Ableton or contributing backing vocals (among other things) to his new band project Friends Of Mine. In short, Jono is one of those rarest of acts – a DJ and producer who not only says he plays music from across the board, but actually delivers on that promise.

Just a brief look at the significant signposts across his career supports his claim. When progressive house legend Dave Seaman was putting together his Global Underground 022 mix representing Melbourne in 2002, Jono’s ‘Intruder’ was one of the first tracks picked for inclusion. A few short years later British breakbeat don Meat Katie recognised Jono’s burgeoning skills in the realms of tech-funk by calling on him for the intercontinental studio collaboration that produced ‘Pace’ from his Vibrator long-player. And in 2007 his ‘Rubber’ co-production with fellow Australian wunderkind Kid Kenobi found its way on to Ministry Of Sound’s flagship Clubber’s Guide To 2007 compilation.

With both his underground and commercial papers rubber-stamped and his music in the crates/wallets/hard drives of pretty much every significant DJ in his genres of choice, Jono did the unthinkable and disappeared from view through much of 2008. But this was a temporary hiatus from the DJ circuit rather than a complete musical hibernation as Jono plotted his next move, determined to make it the right one. If you need another catchphrase “quality over quantity” springs to mind, though thankfully the fruits of his recent studio labours present plenty of both.

The first single set to drop is ‘Girl Vs Boy’, powered by a throbbing electro bass riff but driven home by a deliciously catchy vocal which is sure to lodge itself in the minds of many – no wonder acts like Nick Thayer, Rob Kay & Shamus, D'opus, Destroy Disco, Micah Earnshaw and Blaze Trip have all lined up for a shot at a remix. Then you’ve got the progressive gem ‘Everytime’ featuring the haunting vocal of Kathleen Mitchell, re-discovered by the head honchos at Proton in its original breakbeat guise on an old promo mix and finally refashioned by Jono five years later for release in late 2009. And then there’s the Tom Piper collaboration ‘Rockst*r’, a rollicking hip house groove which chucks a handful of genres through the blender and then adds Marvin Priest (yes, that’s Maxi’s son) to a mix which will be just as at home on radio as it will on club dancefloors.

And we can’t forget Friends Of Mine, the final piece in the Jono Fernandez puzzle – for now at least. The collaboration with long-time friend Tim Watson (that’s him you hear on ‘Girl Vs Boy’ as well) has been bubbling away under the surface for many years has now evolved into a full-blown band project. Jono’s teenage guitar rock influences – not to mention his skills on piano, violin and even the flute – all seep into the sound of a project which sits in the same ballpark as the indie dance acts of this world yet still carries many of the recognisable hallmarks of Jono’s own production.

And make no mistake – you might not be able to put his sound in a box, but even his genre-spanning DJ sets have a sound that is undoubtedly his own, though when you do see him drag his laptop and MIDI controllers into a club prepare yourself for a ride which could take you anywhere. Luckily with Jono Fernandez at the controls, you know you’re in good hands.

I've been a baaaaaaaaad blogger...Sorry :( kiss and make up?

Sorry, but its just taken me that long to find a photo worthy of this post... I think i've done Ok... (Thank you aunt May for posing on cue) aanyway... I've a confession to make, and that is that during my busy busy few months i've neglected to post to you, and that has broken my little heart into even tinier pieces, because posting to you used to be the highlight of my day, and i've since had to replace it with thai food, which can sometimes be very chilli which is fine, unless they neglect to put the little spicyness key next to the picture of the dish, (3 little chillis being the hottest) and you end up with a meal you just cant finish...

Back on topic, sorry that'd just been floating around my mind for too long, i had to get it out. MIXTAPES! YAY!!...

Firstly a new one from señor Tom Yum who has been making a serious splash around sydney recently with residencies at Chinese Laundry, Melt Bar and now Cargo Bar's new Sunday arvo booze / disco fest under an assumed alias which i am not at liberty to disclose (just go and check it out, he's the tall guy with the hat). Recent adventures with Dubstep have led him to create;

Dabbling in Dub (40.05s)

Super cool, super smooth, super dub-tastic (Thats right anything works when its hyphenated with tastic.) and super abuse of wicked samples definately worth the time you'll spend watching the downloads bar slowly roll along.

Also by Tom Yum, Just finished downloading myself and after listening to the first track (Which ive been looking for for aaages, and love alot, like... more than i would my first born) you must hear it... its great;

(Techy/tech housey)

NEXT!

Mindgutter!!! no they didn't die, they went to europe silly... they came back ages ago... don;t leave it up to me to tell you where they are, if you don't know its your own damn fault, IM FUCKING BUSY TOO! They have a new mixtape. Its a teaser for New Years Eve when they will be playing at Sydneys Infamous Chinese Laundry... Jealous?? no... why would you be, you're probably going to be there watching them and Tom Yum too 'cos they'll both be playing.
Their new mix is good, i really like it, one thing though, expect the unexpected, it doesnt really build, though its not supposed to, its just a mish mash of awesome tracks, and thats why we love Mindgutter, they find tracks that shouldn't go together, and make em work. Its like when you were a kid and you were always trying to get the square block through the circle hole, you could never do it... Mindgutter could. Deal with it.

NYE Teaser (42.31s)
Like fitting square blocks in round holes.

By the way Telly from Mindgutter also runs Monthly Parties at Laundry Called Digital Love, they happen on a friday, i'm not going to tell you when the next one is because i don't want to make you lazy, but look it up, they're good nights with resident Dj's Mindgutter, Three Fingers and Awkward Boys kickin ass behind the wheels of steel.

NEXT!!

Dizz And Draz, What Can't be said about label mates and relative newcomers Dizz and Draz other than they can fit the rhombus piece anywhere you want... and it'll still feel nice (trust me). If you can fit 63 tracks into a mixtape that doesn't even go for that many minutes, and it still sounds EPIC!!, you gotta be doing something right. Seriously these kids are the King and Queen (respectively) of wonk, now there are some out there who may challenge this, you aren't... stop trying, go home and make a sandwich its not happening. This Mixtape was created for the Launch of Indigo Muzik's new monthly party @ Bourbon in the Cross next Weekend the 18th of Dec (just in time for Christmas) which i'll talk more about later. The mix is here;

63 Tracks in 1 hour! MADNESS!!!

If You wanna catch these guys in action you have a chance to do so tomorrow night @ Arthouse Indigo Records Sideroom from 1-close Sure to be an incredible night for all involved, Twisted Dj's playing from 1130 - 1 and Fowl Play Dj playing from 10-1130, more info here. Guestlists are closed but to be fair, say Indigo Muzik on the door and recieve $5 entry till 11pm, after which time it will be jacked up. Also, Kaptivate @ Bourbon will be on the 18th of Dec. in the upstairs area across 2 rooms with another stellar lineup ft. Jono Fernandez (Live Ableton Set), Oakes & Lennox, Dr. Werewolf, Twisted DJ's, Fowl Play Vs Thrustin, Dizz & Draz, Andy B and Townhouse Dj's, and for more info and guestlists on that Huge night and lineup check it Here.

NEXT!!!

Rubio!!! now, i don't think many of you would have heard this name before but i assure you, it has been whispered around the highest circles of dance music royalty and hailed as one of the hottest new talents this side of the equator (no one knows which side for sure.). To some Rubio is concidered A recluse, only deciding to make his presence known when no one is there. Like a ninja tip toeing around the emperors castle with sinister ambition, he breathes beats and excretes bass. Some say he's 500 proof and 12x distilled, others believe Rubio survived an encounter with a large african rhino because the sounds coming from him were just too awesome (Rhinos are prone to awesome). Among many things, Rubio is pure mystery, like the second half of your last saturday night, you'll slowly piece it together only as it allows you to. Fortunately your faithful blogger here has tracked down with great difficulty some mixtapes by Rubio which as promised, is pure funk and awesome (the Rhino didn't stand a chance). Eclectic in his ways Rubio is no stranger to sound, like jesus, Rubio loves them all equally, from tech house, to prog, to hard hitting dubstep, to some glitchy german electronica from the mid 90's. Rubio befriends even the weirdest of sounds, and just between you and me, i hear his record collection even includes playschool tunes from the late 80's and theme songs to Fantasia, The Great Escape, and even Yodas theme from Star Wars, but you didn't hear that from me.

Anyway i've already said too much. you must listen.
These mixtapes come from Rubios 'Around the world' series which showcases the absolute acceptance of music as the purest dictation of life, as such each is themed to be from a different part of the living sphere.

Rubio 2 - Lost with the locals (83.30s)
Tech house jungle awesome

Fidget disco funky prog Glee fest

Rubio 4 - Somewhere in Berlin (120.19s)
TECHNO! TECHNO! FUN! FUN!

Rubio does have a facebook group, but i can't find it now, try for yourself, you can also check Rubio on Myspace, Twitter, Soundcloud, Friendster, Beatport, Juno, Dj Download, and at all major record stores. Ask around. People know.

I hope you all enjoy these mixtapes, and im sorry about all the banter but it was entirely necessary, if you are as passionate as i am about a good mixtape you would have read through it all and by now hopefully we've lost all the wankers who are just here for some free tunes cos they're too cheap to buy off beatport. FUCKERS! haha!

Love you.

Dan xx.

Ps. secret... Rubio 5, Lazing with the Lions, out next week, he told me himself. ;)

Benny Royal: It's A Jungle

With tracks and remixes released by: Ministry of Sound, Toolroom Records, Stealth Records, Catch 22, Nervous records, Floorplay Music, Ultra Records, Spinnin' records, Sneakerz Muzik and many more, Benny Royal is fast becoming one of The Netherlands fastest rising names in House Music! Control Freq are proud and excited to present his newest EP, comprising of 3 barnstorming tracks that will be blowing roofs off of clubs the world over!! The title track, 'It's a Jungle' is a very dutch sounding house record with skippy beats & synth stabs. 'Tripping' takes things very much more into the techno arena with driving bassline, big snares and lots of bleeps. 'Hold Me' is a cool house groover, but still with plenty of pace and those skippy beats again.

Please support this EP Release at Beatport!

I Hope You Enjoy!!

Michael Woods

Michael Woods was born to an Argentine mother and Guyanese father in the balmy climes of Hackney, East London. Meeting over the phone whilst working for rival telecommunications companies, his parents’ far-flung love affair blossomed; writing to each other every day, they eventually flew to London and married.

“My first memory is being sat at a piano,” says producer and DJ Michael. “I don’t remember not being able to play it. My father had us practicing every day from the age of 3. And it didn’t stop there – next it was the trumpet, then guitar, followed by drums, and, erm, even the triangle!”

Whilst being classically trained at Pimlico’s Trinity College of Music, Michael discovered house music and began some rather reckless extra-curricular activities, mainly breaking into the school music rooms at lunch, where, like coveted treasure, lay an ancient Apple Mac and Korg M1 upon which Michael would blast out warped electronic odysseys.

Meanwhile, weekends were a lottery. Michael would either find himself on percussion for the London Symphony Orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall, or at a sweaty underground rave with his sister. “I loved Desire 92, Base Box at Lea Valley Trading Estates, Satellite Club in Vauxhall or, if we were feeling adventurous, thundering up the M1 to Leeds for Back 2 Basics. It was an odd juxtaposition that worked perfectly.”

One night at The Coliseum in Vauxhall changed Michael’s life. “I heard Grace ‘Not Over Yet’ and there was no more questioning it, I had to be a part of it all, if I made any money or not.” Initially breaking into the scene as Warrior and landing himself a top 20 UK and #1 club chart smash with the eponymous track, Michael’s sophomore release, ‘Voodoo,’ enjoyed similar success and led to a string of collaborations, including 2003’s hook-up with Judge Jules and vocalist sister Marcella Woods on ‘Beautiful,’ which crashed into the top ten singles chart.

It was a few more years before Michael’s Out of Office alter ego was born in 2007: “I am notoriously impossible to get hold of,” he says. “All my friends ever see when they email is ‘Michael Woods is out of office’ – it just stuck. As Michael Woods, my productions tend to be house with a big-room vibe, whilst Out of Office is more electro with a heavy bassline.”

Radio 1’s Pete Tong has already championed Out Of Office as ‘set to be major,’ naming ‘Hands Up’ an ‘Essential New Tune.’ He’s received consistent backing from Roger Sanchez’s internationally syndicated ‘Release Yourself’ radio show and picked up support from #1 house DJ David Guetta. 2008 also saw him rock Gatecrasher Summer Soundsytem and DJ alongside Soulwax, Jonathan Ulysses and Bodyrox.

Most recently, Michael has remixed Grammy-award nominee Adele, Xenomania signing Gabriella Cilmi and MOBO-winner Nate James. However, since launching new label Diffused Music in September ‘08, priorities have become his own productions and pushing the label.

“It’s time to concentrate on myself now,” he says. “With Diffused, I want to explore all genres, mixing whatever sounds I uncover and being totally fearless. There’s no other way to live.”

I Hope You Enjoy!! Plus many more of Michael Woods to come from Rising Digital!

Don Diablo: Sellout Sessions 3 + New Release

2009 has been quite the rollercoaster ride for Don Diablo, having already killed the crowd with the demonic overground club smash 'Hooligans' (Sunday Times Culture), which was a collaboration with UK rapper Example, as well as playing festivals like Glastonbury & Creamfields this summer and remixing acts like Mika, Cassius and FrankMusik. Add to that, he has been 'Most Blogged Artist' in the world several times this year, according to music blog aggregator The Hype Machine, and the blogosphere continues to love Don Diablo with over 4 million downloads in the last 9 months. Earlier this year, he already scored a song placement in hit TV-series CSI:NY and most recently signed a global administration deal with leading global independent music publisher Chrysalis Music. He just released a top 10 Aria Chart compilation, Neon Essentials Vol. 2, through Warner Music and earlier this year did the prestigious cover CD for DJmag, which also ranked him 137 in their renowned DJ Top 100 list; quite the achievement given his soundtrack as a DJ.

He has produced, composed, written and performed all the songs on his forthcoming debut album, Life is a Festival (Sony Music), which he recorded all by himself in his Amsterdam-based studio. With forthcoming tours through Australia, Asia, North & South America and a plethora of UK gigs, 2010 is looking to become an even bigger year for Don Diablo, who was recently called 'man-of-the-moment' by NME, 'a future star' by dance music connoisseur Pete Tong (BBC Radio 1) and even Kanye West is down with the Don, promoting Don Diablo's latest video on his infamous blog. The first big single from his album, ‘Where I belong (Life is a festival)’ will be released early 2010 to launch his album. There will be no escaping Don Diablo in 2010!

Here is the forthcoming release of Sellout Sessions 03, which is the third chapter in the series. The new mix-compilation features a lot of exclusive remixes and tracks by Don Diablo, but also includes tracks and mixes by The Prodigy, Bloc Party, Simian Mobile Disco, Tiga, Cassius, Fake Blood and Stereo MC’s, to name but a few!

Don Diablo about his new disc: “This new mix-album is basically an overview of what I've been up to this year as a producer, remixer and DJ. Sellout Sessions 03 features some of my favourite remixes I did this year for artists like Cassius, Stereo MC's, Linus Loves, Cagedbaby, One eskimO, Dragonette and others. The mix also features three of my most successful dancefloor productions of this year: ‘Hooligans’, ’Too cool for school’, ‘Disco Disco Disco’ and a brand-new track called ‘Teen Scream Machine’ which will be released in 2010. The rest of the tracklist was filled in by simply selecting some of the tunes that have been doing well for me in my DJ sets, including tracks by Tiga, Simian Mobile Disco, Bloc Party, Fake Blood and The Prodigy. All in all I think this mix perfectly showcases my own sound in many different ways, which is not always easy to capture on one disc or in general for that matter!”

Richard Grey: I'm Back

Well because i just did a post connecting to Erick Morillo, I might as well do another one in similar context, they've worked together before.. I give you spanish sensation Richard Grey.

“Dance music will become the new mainstream, the new pop. Thanks to David Guetta ! And yes even more underground records will be played in radio and tv on peak time hours, I’m sure of that. And there are still so many new big markets which are quite new in dance music - India, China, parts of South America, that’s half the world.” - Richard Grey

So in the next few years we can expect world beating tunes, and, of course, plenty more parties. He’s so excited he almost can’t contain himself...

“The beat, the drum... The underground. Yeah, music man. Music coming from my soul. I will die in a club playing for my 100th birthday. Haha!”

Now this is an exciting release to all '90's fans out there (if there are any). I'm Back includes the fantastic vocals and melodic lines from Gloria Gaynor's I Will Survive. A perfect House tune to get the crowd back on the dancefloor (trust me, it worked).

Grab this fantastic release package at Beatport.

I Hope You Enjoy!

Tittsworth: Here He Comes

The third single of Tittsworth's debut album 12 Steps, a remix package by an all-star cast. Here He Comes features the voices of the ladies du jour, Nina Sky, who are currently killing it on Major Lazer's Keep It Going Louder as well as a hot 16 by club-rap sensation Pitbull. Plant[Music] favourites Nadastrom of Dubsided fame, turning out five and a half minutes of impeccable dancefloor heat with a middle dubstep section that simply stomps. Trouble & Bass' AC Slater offers his signature bassline-house hybrid, with a monstrous low-end wobble nicely matched with a classic New York-style house percussion. Plant's own Stretch Armstrong teams up with Holland's Jaimie Fanatic who has solidified himself as one of electro-house's rising stars with his peak-hour What's Happenin' To Ya on Mad Decent. Stretch & Jaimie's remix features a guest vocal from Natalie Storm, an up-and-coming dancehall diva from Kingston, Jamaica. Finally, Cheap Thrills' own Rico Tubbs links up with his man Will Power for a bassline-rave banger.

I Hope You Enjoy!!

The Count & Sinden: Strange Things

The Count & Sinden have just released two more devastating club tracks in the form of Strange Things / Elephant 1234. Available on limited 12” and via digital download, the release features two vastly different tracks showcasing The Count & Sinden’s eclectic taste and endless talents...

With an infectious chorus sampling John Holt’s early 70’s lost reggae classic of the same name, the maverick duo’s Strange Things is a haunting yet energised roots meets old-skool jungle anthem, set to get the temperature rising.

Strange Things is backed with Elephant 1234, a tweaked 4/4 cut that takes influences from the best in today’s European and US electronic music scenes with a Count & Sinden twist … this is where dance music is right here, right now...
