Kissy Sell Out: Garden Friends

For they Sydney fans who were lucky enough to witness his amazing (and fast cd changing) set last Saturday night at HOME the venue, here is his lasted release!!!

Here is the latest interview, done by In The Mixes Dave Ruby Howe:

There’s a few things you need to know about Kissy Sell Out. Other than his heavyweight profile as one of the UK’s primary electro proponents with his on BBC Radio program and artistic other life, the man born Thomas Bisdee is a intensely charismatic with a likeable, affable nature on display at all times. He likes to laugh a lot. And despite being a party starting DJ, he has an intriguing thoughtful and introspective side to his persona.

When ITM’s Dave Ruby Howe caught up with the livewire deck hand to talk about his March club tour and new album Youth, all these qualities shine through.

Hey mate, how’re you doing today?

“All good man, just getting ready to do this Australian tour soon.”

Good to hear it, I know there’s some people pretty excited to see you return after your visit for We Love Sounds last year.

“Oh good, we had a lot of fun doing that festival. But, you know, I think when I came out to Australia last year and I brought the full band it was probably too soon to do that. It was a bit weird to be playing these songs that hadn’t actually been released yet!”

Yeah I always thought that was an odd decision since your album Youth has only now just come out in Australia.

“Well, we can only know that now in hindsight! But we did have a really fun time and played some great shows then. This time though I’m excited for the record to be out there now and to be there in the clubs. I’m really just loving DJing right now.”

In the current climate where anyone can download an album online and geography isn’t as important for a CD release, it’s almost as if we did get the record back then, because we could access on the internet if we wanted.

“Yeah, you know I think that’s really cool. Not that I’m supporting illegal downloading but I would be happy that people would just be interested in it. And then if they want to support the artist then they can buy because I think that’s the best thing about being a listener. I mean, I get the biggest bloody mailbag full of promos every single week, but I always find I appreciate and enjoy music more when I’ve actually gone out and bought it myself. I get the biggest buzz out of that because I’m a fan and I’m always looking for and collecting new stuff.”

Since it was released last year in the UK and completed even earlier than that, are the songs on the record old to you now?

“No I don’t think it will ever be, because it’s about something that’s very personal to me, it’s about my childhood. If it wasn’t about something, if it was just made to try and be cool then I probably would be over it all. I’m actually really glad it’s coming out over there now because I get to talk about it again and get into it all. I’m interested to see how it will go with you guys because it’s quite strange for a dance record, really.”

How so?

“Well, I realised when it was realised in the UK just how different it was. It’s such a personal record and to have that as my debut album, well, I don’t think people were really expected that.”

Yeah I did notice from a few lessons that it actually feels very complete, like it’s not just a bunch of singles slapped together, it’s a full story with a beginning, middle and end. I think in the current climate where things are so easily accessible and disposable, that’s a brave move – especially on for a debut LP.

“It certainly felt that way for me, and when the initial critics’ reactions came in you could tell that some people just brushed it off and dismissed it. I guess it was naïve of me to think that I could make something like this, make it so personal and have people get it. But having said that I’m really proud of what I did with it, I love everything about it right down to the cover art.”

Speaking of critics, I read a particularly savage review of the album in the NME. That wasn’t very nice!

“[Laughs] That was a very funny review, it was hysterical!”

I’m glad you’re laughing about it because I don’t know how I would feel about that if I were you.

“Yes sure, I mean obviously it was quite hurtful, but the NME has a reputation for being really bitchy, and I think that they went out of their way to slag me off. It was funny though because I think they called it something like ‘self-indulgent, neon-slattered electro pop’ and that is basically what I do. I didn’t really see a problem with that!”

Have you got plans to release a follow-up to Youth at all? Something that tracks the next chapter of your life?

“Yeah I have been working on a new record that at the moment has the working title of Family, which is about me growing up and moving on with my life. It’s going to be different to Youth in a lot of ways, I think it’ll be nearly all instrumentals on there and I’m going to try not to worry about what other people think and just get it all done.”

Dizzee Rascal: Holiday

"Holiday", produced by Calvin Harris acts as the third single from Rascal's fourth studio album Tongue N' Cheek (OUT NOW!!!). Harris originally wrote the song for British five-piece girl group, The Saturdays however, it was rejected. The song was released digitally on 24 August 2009 with a physical copy that followed on 31 August.

The music film clip for Holiday was directed by the duo Hope Audikana, filmed in Ibiza. Producer Harris was set to make a cameo appearance wishing to wear his trademark fly-eye glasses which were not permitted and told it "would detract from the look of the video." He was also asked to wear a selected t-shirt and dance for a few seconds which he did not agree upon, so he therefore did not make an appearance in the video.. (Hahaha)

Here is the original plus the new remix by Laidback Luke, which can be purchased at Beatport.

I Hope You Enjoy!

Tiesto & Sneaky Sound System

It’s all coming up roses for our very own Sneaky Sound System. Since heading abroad to try their luck in overseas territories, the electro-poppers have scored a streak of successes including a UK number 1 with Jacques Lu Cont/Stuart Price and securing a slot on the bill for trance legend Tiesto’s enormous Victoria Park concert in London this week.

Well I thought it was a bit of a false rumour, but it would seem as though Tiesto has become quite smitten with his support act and tapped the group for a collaborative single called I Will Be Here that hits radio stations today!

Now for the song itself -- It’s good, euphoric fare as you’d expect from Tiesto, and he’s clearly got the creative smarts to edit Sneaky’s input, saving this track from becoming a cluttered mess like most of Sneaky’s second album turned out to be.

My input, I'm waiting for the dub version...

Laidback Luke & Diplo: Hey!

A brand new release by two massive producers!!

Laidback Luke!

Luke is laidback about everything except music. Named best producer of 2008 by such qualified house maestros as David Guetta, Martin Solveig and Roger Sanchez, and landing an impressive new entry – voted 46 – in DJ magazine’s Top 100 DJs Poll, it’s clear that Holland’s homeboy is on the rise like never before. Laidback Luke (Luke van Scheppingen) was born in Manila, Philippines, but grew up in the Netherlands. He loved guitars, graffiti, hip-hop and house, and soon found a mentor in DJ/producer Dobre (The Good Men, Chocolate Puma). Luke was just a teenager when he began producing music, taking the ‘laid back’ tag from Snoop Dogg’s ‘Gin & Juice’. Invited by the UK’s Pete Tong to complete an Essential Mix on BBC Radio 1, it’s been a long time coming (over a decade now) but Luke’s stratospheric success befits his world-beating talents and is ripe to reach new levels of hotness in 2009!

Diplo!

One thing of which Diplo cannot be accused is being afraid to experiment with new music. With his mash-up mixtapes, he found and created a sound where his musical tastes -- '80s pop, electronica, Dirty South hip-hop, and his major influence, Miami bass music, intersect. Developing a yearning to produce more worldly music, he also began to throw his energy behind the Brazilian youth- and street-based music known as funk carioca (also referred to as baile funk), a derivation of Miami bass music. So, it was no surprise that when he established his own label, Mad Decent Records, around 2005, his first signee was the funk carioca group Bondo do Role. Becoming an internationally recognized artist, Diplo developed a knack for championing new world music that seems natural given his dynamism and boundless musical outlook.

Slap n' Dash

Oh dear, where does one begin to describe this... alright, so take two kids from melbourne named Mu-Gen and Scattermish (pictured above left to right) with one of the oldest music blogs in Australia (Scatterblog!!), throw them into Sydney's Chinese Laundry with 2 turntables each, a laptop each, Serato scratch or Traktor and a mixer... what do you get? Big trouble at the infamous Laundry last weekend presented the two together as Slap n' Dash, their set, as described above was incredible. Those crazy party boys from down south showed us a thing or two about how its done, and my god, they did it so fucking well. Their new four turntable set was absolutely amazing, had the crowd absolutely sweating and bumpin' up a storm, sometimes hearing 4 tracks at once.
I must say, it was the first time i'd ever heard such a thing done, for those of you who missed it, here's part 1&2 of an ongoing mix they're playing with at the moment with 4 turntables and 2 mixers!!!

Photobucket

Now that you all understand what I've been talking about, you're probably asking yourself some very hard questions, the first being, 'mmm how the fuck did they do that???' I must say I felt the same way, so I went to Scattermish for some help, and this is what he had to say..

'with the 4 deck thing, yeah sometimes we freestyle, but the sets are heavily crafted, basically we have a bunch of little sections, so they're usually like 15 minute chunks, and then we choose throughout the night what to jump between depending on how stuff's going but since it's 4 turntables, and 3 or 4 tracks often playing at once, it needs to be pretty rehearsed that's why we're constantly glued to the screens, cause we're grabbing new songs, hitting cues, looping, mixing scratching etc' (hence in all the photos you're about to view, there are around about 2 with their faces in it.)

With a blog thats packed to the brim with music, mixes and general party stuff, one like myself can't help but be a tad envious, so when the chance to see these guys arose with the potential for an interview, photos and exclusive post, I couldn't help at jump at it. Anyways i figure its about enough from me, I'm going to let Mu-Gen tell the rest of their story, just a little note before I do though the interview was recorded on the night in person with no preparation on my mobile phones voice recorder, some words have been changed and the whole thing has been tidied up a touch as we were both absolutely blind.

oh, and here's another little Gem from Mu-Gen to get you in the mood, his most recent liveset containing 45 songs in around about 50 minutes, the boy is insane.

Photobucket

How did you get into DJ'ing??
Aaah, when I was about..10 I started drumming in a jazz band with my old man who was around 35 at the time, so I was playing with a bunch of middle aged dudes playin jazz for about 10 years, from jazz I moved into rock like skunk, power and shit like that, and from that I moved into Djing which is what i do now...

What is your favorite thing about DJ'ing?
Making people sweat, i loove making people sweat and making people dance. The main thing I crave though, because I'm not the big look up and take notice of the crowd kinda dude, is people bumping to the music, if people are doing that then im a happy dude.

I know you guys have had a pretty full calender but, what was your favorite ever gig?
Had to be the Merideth Music festival in Victoria, around about 18,000 people, 1 stage, so the whole concept of the festival is one stage, not multiple stages so no matter what music your into you gotta get down to whats happening on that one stage, we played the headlining spot on the Saturday night and it was definatly the greatest gig we've had to date.

Tell us a little bit about the blog??
Myself, Scattermish, Paz, Louis Cancut and Matt Cant, run a blog called scatterblog, its an internet blog site which we are about to turn into a dot com, we're building it at the moment, and its a music label aswell, scatter music and we've signed a whole bunch of local and international acts like, solo, scotty B, sticky K, all the guys from the blog and the whole concept is free music, im a firm believer that music should be free and the way that good artists should make their money is from touring , and if you're not good enough to tour, then you shouldnt be getting paid for it, if you can make music and you can tour, then granted you can make money, it should be like it was in the 60's where no1 made any money from their albums and people only got paid for doing gigs.

Given that you guys have had so much success in the Blog world and in clubs around Melbourne and Sydney, it's only a matter of time until you start producing, have you been doing much of this??
We have been, yeah, we've got a couple of things around at the moment, ive got a remix out on sony for ground component, a couple of originals out on scattermusic, and i think we've got a new remix happening for NASA, if everyone knows NASA, dope dude, coming out in the next 2/3 weeks i think.

Top 5 tracks at the current?? (As told by Scattermish!!)

1. Laidback Luke - Generation Noise (Riva Starr Rechunk)
2. R1 Ryders - Rubberband (Sorry guys, the track is impossible to find, might be time for some crate diggin!)
3. Tee 'Ski & Shab Ruffcut - Ooww Barr Boo (Edu K Remix)
4.
La Roux - In 4 the Kill (L-Vis 1990 RIP Hyper Bass Remix)
5. Toadally Krossed Out - Toads Theme
6. Anything Sharkslayer (couldn't help but add these guys, tee hee)

I managed to find 2 tracks, (wicked, highly recommended!!!)

Favorite ever tune?!!?? (As told by Mu-Gen)
 Steppenwolf - Magic carpet ride.

Awesome stuff guys, we very much 'Enjoyed The Show' and we very much hope to see you all again!! Don't forget to check out their blog for more exciting news, all their upcoming gigs, tracks, mixes and interviews are on there just waiting to be downloaded, and you can all see what I Hope You Do Enjoy The Show aspires to be.
Aaanyway, as usual I brought my camera along to the event, and photographed it, this is how it went down!
